California DMV creates self-driving car regulations

California’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is working to create regulations for self-driving cars like the vehicle Google is developing, according to a report from KFSN-TV.

Governor Jerry Brown last year signed a law allowing the vehicles to operate in the state.

The state’s DMV is considering rules that would answer questions that have previously arisen about driverless technology.

“We need to take baby steps. We need to make sure these vehicles can operate safely,” said Bernard Soriano with the DMV Autonomous Vehicle Project. “When these vehicles get into an accident, who’s going to be liable?”

Local companies, car industries and consumers has begun offering suggestions for the rules, some voicing concerns about over-regulation and safety.

California’s DMV will need to have the regulations in place by the end of 2014.
