That’s the conclusion of a study done by the University of California Riverside.
According to Bill Welch, the principle engineer on the study, “An 18 wheeler diesel engine truck would have to drive 143 miles on the freeway to put out the same mass of particulates as a single charbroiled hamburger patty.”
The Diesel Technology Forum is promoting the study to highlight the advancements made in clean diesel engines since 2006. Nitrogen oxides have been reduced 99 percent and particulate matter has been cut by some 90 percent. According to the DTF, it now takes 60 of today’s trucks to emist the same level of particulate emissions as one truck built in 1998.
