The Transportation Research Board (TRB) has selected Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Director Kirk Steudle to receive its 2015 W.N. Carey, Jr., Distinguished Service Award.

TRB is recognizing Steudle because he has provided “outstanding service in transportation research, including being a national leader in the development of connected vehicle technology, and service to TRB”.

The award is given to individuals who have provided TRB with leadership and “distinguished” service, but who “have not necessarily been personally active in transportation research”.

Steudle has served on many committees and organizing groups for TRB and has served as chairman of the board’s Executive Committee, Committee for the second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2) and Committee on SHRP 2 Implementation.

He also served on National Cooperative Highway Research Program panels on Development an Asset Management Plan for the Interstate Highway System and on Administration of Highway and Transportation Agencies.

The award dates back to 1972 when it was called the Highway Research Board Distinguished Service Award. It was renamed the Transportation Research Board Distinguished Service Award in 1974 when the board changed its name, and then renamed again in 1987 to honor W.N. Carey, Jr., the board’s director from 1967 to 1980.

TRB will present the award to Steudle during its annual meeting Jan. 10-14 in Washington, D.C.
