Haul truck propelled by AC drive technology

Hitachi’s largest rigid-frame haul truck, the EH5000, has a maximum payload capacity of 351 tons and uses AC drive technology developed in conjunction with Siemens. There are two horsepower ranges to choose from: 2,700 horsepower provided by either the Detroit Diesel Series 4000 or Cummins QSK60 engines or a 3,000 horsepower version of the Detroit Diesel Series 4000 engine. According to the company, the AC drive system is 2 to 3 percent more efficient than an equivalent DC drive system, has full retarding down to zero mph and can be stopped with a dynamic retarder to save on brake wear. The brushless AC traction motor and alternator and blower motors reduce maintenance costs and increase uptime.
