The House Appropriations Committee on Wednesday approved major cuts to 2014 TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) grants in a markup of the panel’s Transportation, and Housing and Urban Development (THUD) bill, Salon reports.
The bill reduces the TIGER program from $500 million to $100 million.
A report from The Hill notes that the bill also lacks increases in rail safety and Amtrak grants.
Transportation and housing subcommittee Chairman Tom Latham said a decrease in Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) revenue forced cuts to the bill. The bill authorizes a total of $1.8 billion less than this fiscal year, The Hill reports.
