The House approved a bill by an overwhelming margin of 387-37 on July 23 that would restore $8 billion to the federal Highway Trust Fund with the goal of preventing a revenue shortage in the next fiscal year.
The shortfall could run as high as $14 billion and cost up to 380,000 jobs, according to a statement from a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. A provision of the bill ensures that the trust fund will remain affluent through the current authorization period, which will end on September 30, 2008.
