First Word: No distractions

These conditions are hard to imagine in our modern day, huh? I answered an offer similar to the ad above last month and attended the JH Ranch Father-Daughter Camp in the remote mountains of northwestern California with my daughter Morgan.

If you are blessed to have children or grandchildren and are experiencing or have experienced those lovely teen years, spending an entire week with them may be a scary thought. But I have to tell you my week with Morgan was an opportunity that I’m glad we did not miss.

The “Ranch” – which it is affectionately called – designs their father-daughter camps to strengthen relationships and give fathers the practical tools they need to help their daughters make the transition from adolescence to adulthood. The week is filled with challenging physical activities, parent and teen learning sessions and plenty of quality down time with your child completely void of distraction.

We tackled some of the tough issues facing today’s teenagers including curfews, dating, family relationships, friends/peer pressure, purity, substance abuse and the importance of a strong faith in God as the centerpiece of our lives. Although you may think you’re the only one who can’t figure out what happens to your kids when they turn 14, just sit around a bunk house with seven other dads from all parts of the United States for about 15 minutes and you’ll quickly learn that you’re not alone!

As we approach the end of summer and the start of another school year, I hope you’ve had a chance to take a vacation or just a few days of simple down time with those who are closest to you. In this fast paced world we live in, it is easy to fill our days with distractions in hopes that tomorrow will be better. My goal is to slow it down whenever I possibly can. I may miss something special!
