With the introduction of the XL5200V crawler excavator, Gradall has taken the wraps off the largest machine in its entire fleet boasting upgraded electronics, a more compact counterweight system and, of course, a telescoping tilting boom for extra versatility in highway applications.
The new machine is powered by a Tier 4 Final Volvo Penta diesel and has a boom force of 24,941 pounds with bucket breakout force of 25,405 pounds. Thanks to the new engine, fuel efficiency is up 5 percent over previous models, Gradall says.
The trademark telescoping tilting boom allows the machine to work in tunnels, under bridges and even on the ground floors of multi-story buildings thanks to its much lower profile compared to a typical knuckle boom excavator. The boom telescopes up to 33 feet, 11 inches at ground line and is capable of a dig depth of 25 ft., 4 in.
The boom can also tilt 220 degrees, a standard feature that allows for more precise attachment positioning without losing boom power. This is in contrast to conventional booms which require a boom-tilting mechanism which adds weight and sacrifices boom forces, Gradall says.
Rear swing on the XL5200V has been shortened thanks to a new counterweight design. This reduces traffic obstruction from the machine when working on road demolition and grading projects.
This new model also features an improved 24-volt electrical system and load-sensing hydraulics which adjusts power to the load the machine is currently working with in order save fuel. The system works automatically and doesn’t require operators to switch between working modes.
Inside the cab, operators will find standard air conditioning and heat along with an overhead skylight and removable front window. The seat is adjustable eight ways with joysticks located on left and right arm pods. Operators can choose between the Gradall, Deere or SAE joystick patterns with the flip of a switch.
Attachments for the machine include excavating, ditching, trenching, pavement removal and dredging buckets. Also available are a grading blade, boom extension, tree limb shear, live boom and fixed thumb grapple.
