Video: How This Contractor Started a Daycare to Retain Workers

D&G Excavating of Marshall, Minnesota, is one of our 12 finalists for the 2021 Contractor of the Year award.

The company was formed in 1979 by Dave Gruhot. His son and daughter-in-law Brian and Kristin Gruhot bought the company in 2007. Their son David has joined the firm, marking a third generation of leadership coming aboard the family-owned business.

In this video, David and Kristin discuss the decision to open a company-sponsored daycare center for children of employees. Daycares in the area have limited hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., making it difficult for construction workers who arrive on the job at 6 a.m. and stay until 6 p.m. during peak construction season.

While discussing how to retain young workers, Kristin came up with the daycare idea, which has proved to be successful in keeping employees on board.

David also discusses the company’s expanding use of GPS machine control on its equipment, how the company weathered the covid outbreak and how his entry to construction was falling asleep on his father’s backhoe.
