Field-clearing and grubbing occurs in April to make way for a new section of the SH 99 Grand Parkway between U.S. 59/69 North and Loop 494.Construction is expected to begin in the fall around the Houston area on the next stages of what is expected to become the largest highway loop in the country.
The next phases of the State Highway 99 Grand Parkway are expected to open in 2022, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. TxDOT recently awarded a $855 million contract to Grand Parkway Infrastructure – a partnership of Ferrovial Agroman Construction, Webber LLC and Granite Construction Inc. – to build the next 52.8-mile section of the highway loop.
When completed, the loop will extend 184 miles, encircling the greater Houston area and spanning seven counties, TxDOT says.
The next round of construction will pass through Chambers, Harris, Liberty and Montgomery counties, northeast of Houston. The total project cost is estimated at $1.28 billion.
Construction along the corridor from the Highway 59 interchange in New Caney to the north and Highway 146 in Baytown to the south will begin in fall, according to Grand Parkway Infrastructure.
The project includes a new tolled two-lane controlled-access facility, with intermittent four-lane sections for passing from U.S. 59 North to IH 10 East; four additional toll lanes from IH 10 East to FM 1405; and reconstruction of 74 bridges.
The Grand Parkway has been discussed for 50 years. The first segment, D, opened in 1994, and the most recent section, G, opened in 2016.
Construction on Segment H of the Grand Parkway is scheduled to begin in fall. Work on Segment I-1 will begin in 2019.
