KOBELCO has decked out its next-generation SK850LC-11 excavator with a new cab, more efficient engine and more standard features to enhance operator productivity and comfort.

The 85-ton excavator is designed to deliver power and stability when lifting heavy loads and operating large tools in heavy civil, quarry and mass excavation applications, KOBELCO says.

When equipped with the standard 11-foot, 10-inch arm, the SK850LC-11 has a bucket digging force of 90,600 pounds, an arm digging force of 69,900 pounds and a lifting capacity of 66,010 pounds. “Customers will find the SK850LC-11 lets you load more trucks and move more material more efficiently,” the company says.

With the -11 model, KOBELCO traded the SK850LC’s 510-horsepower Hino engine for a 512-horsepower Isuzu Tier 4 Final engine. The engine is fitted with a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and an SCR device to control emissions without using a diesel particulate filter (DPF). The large-capacity DEF tank extends fill-up intervals.

Fuel efficiency has been further enhanced through the efficient yet powerful hydraulic system and the following standard features:

  • Boom-to-Arm Hydraulic Regeneration System: Uses the downward force generated by the boom's weight to push fluid to the excavator arm cylinder.
  • Eco Mode: Reduces fuel consumption for utility work and other precision tasks.
  • Auto Idle Stop: Automatically stops the engine after 5 minutes of inactivity, or at a preferred duration set by the operator, if the safety lock lever is in the up position.
  • Auto Engine Deceleration: Automatically reduces the engine speed when the control lever is placed in neutral.

The SK850LC-11 can perform multiple functions simultaneously – such as lift, swing and carry – while traveling thanks to its Independent Travel function. With the press of a switch, the excavator dedicates one hydraulic pump to the travel system and one to all other functions for multifunction performance, while pilot controls deliver smooth response to operator input.

Other modes available include Heavy (H) Mode for maximum power on demanding jobs and Standard (S) Mode for balanced power and fuel consumption. The unlimited-use Power Boost function adds an extra punch of horsepower to get through the toughest conditions.

Additional features include:

  • Auto warm-up, which automatically brings the engine and hydraulic oil up to the optimal operating temperature.
  • Combination rotation with 2-way nibbler breaker with case drain.
  • ISO/BHL pattern changer.
  • Boom and arm safety valves.

All KOBELCO -11 Series excavators get redesigned cabs with enhanced ergonomics and safety features, additional space and greater visibility.

The 7-way adjustable, heated air suspension seat moves together with the armrests and hydraulic controls to reduce operator fatigue, provide shock absorption and improve ride comfort. “The operator’s pilot levers move horizontally without arching of the wrist, while also providing shorter lever strokes to deliver a swifter, more precise movement,” the company says.

Multiple air conditioning and heater vents are directed towards the operator for comfort in all weather conditions.

The 10-inch color monitor displays key machine information including work mode, maintenance intervals and fuel consumption, as well as providing a 270-degree view from the machine’s standard three camera system. It is controlled by a jog dial on the right-side console.

The hydraulic flow rates for the breaker, nibbler and rotating grapple can be adjusted by the operator through the monitor, allowing for faster attachment changes. Mode settings for other attachments, such as a hammer or tiltrotator, can also be easily added or changed based on operator preference and application. The in-cab hydraulic pressure release function allows operators to safely change work tools.

In addition, all internal switches and dials in the cabin have LED backlighting to provide a a clear view in low light conditions. Interior LED lights turn on and off automatically when the door is open or the ignition is turned to the off position to provide safe entry and exit.

KOBELCO also equipped the cab with an FM/AM, AUX, Bluetooth, hands-free telephone radio, smartphone holder, USB charger and a 12V power outlet.

Durability and Maintenance

Designed for durability, the heavy-duty exterior includes a retractable undercarriage, three track guides, belly guards, swivel guard and folding cat walks. The variable gauge crawler extends the tracks for added stability during operation and retracts them for easier transport.

For added safety, the machine has six front and four rear LED work lights, rear swing flashers, a battery disconnect switch and a Level II FOPS cab guard that tilts open for easy cleaning. A reversible fan and removable clean out screens keep the machine running cool.

Additional standard features include KOBELCO’s KOMEXS telematic system, K-LOAD weighing system and a 4-year/4,000-hour limited full machine warranty.  Optional items include a front cab guard and removable counterweight. Pre-welded brackets allow for quicker installation of machine guidance systems.
