Hurricanes boost equipment listings at salvage website

If you like buying damaged equipment at discount prices and cannibalizing, repairing or rebuilding it, salvagesale.com may be worth checking out.

With about 40 listings, the machinery and equipment category, which is composed mostly of construction equipment, is the largest of the site’s 14 segments. Many of the machines currently listed on the site were damaged by hurricanes Katrina or Rita. Several others were recovered from thieves. Construction equipment listings last month included backhoes, wheel loaders, skid steers, excavators and generators.

Salvagesale.com, which works in a manner similar to eBay, was created six years ago to connect insurance companies, retailers and corporate asset managers with buyers. Detailed listings showcase products’ features and histories and let buyers and sellers watch the auction unfold in real time. At the close of the auction, Salvagesale says it makes sure both the buyer and seller are protected by handling all payments through an escrow account.
