Caterpillar, Disney settle movie lawsuit

Caterpillar and Disney settled a trademark infringement lawsuit last week that claimed the direct-to-DVD movie “George of the Jungle 2” damages the equipment maker’s image. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed, but the two companies issued statements saying the deal was amicable. Caterpillar filed the lawsuit last fall, shortly before the movie’s release. The company alleged the film tainted its image because scenes showing an evil army of Caterpillar machines attacking George’s jungle home give the wrong impression about its environmental views. Disney defended its use of the Caterpillar logo by saying the movie is an obvious comedy and viewers would not confuse Caterpillar with the film’s villains.
