Transportation museum takes trip down memory lane
Hit the road this month to experience the America on Wheels Museum, which not only showcases new innovations in transportation, but also reminisces about road warriors gone by.
Located in the revitalized Lehigh Landing section of Allentown, Pennsylvania, the $17 million, 48,000-square-foot facility will be home to all kinds of over-the-road wheels – bicycles, motorcycles, family cars, a rotating exhibit of muscle cars, race cars, electric cars, hydrogen-powered cars and Class 8 heavy-duty trucks. America on Wheels features the Mack Granite “Immersion Experience” – an exhibit designed to give museum visitors the feel of driving a Mack. Once behind the wheel of the Pinnacle Series truck, the “driver” experiences the sights and sounds of the open road.
The museum also has an Engine Club, which includes museum passes and other perks.

Word for Word
“We can unleash the greatest wave of transportation investment this country has ever seen. We have the need, the technology and the resources to build dozens more projects like the Hoover Dam Bypass.”
– U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters.
“Believe it or not, we can’t keep up with the changes. The advances on these machines come so quickly that we could never keep up with them from a point of view of imposing rules. Our code is straightforward – follow the manufacturer’s instructions.”
– Mike Lulay, a technical specialist with Oregon’s Occupational Safety and Health Division telling The Oregonian about the difficulty of ensuring crane safety.
“You always expect prices to go up. But 43 percent in five years is a lot.”
– Alison Primo Black, vice president of policy for the American Road & Transportation Builders Association, telling McClatchy-Tribune Business News that increases in the price of road building materials brought on by high oil prices is adversely affecting contractors.
