Screen shot from Fox 59 video.Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) crews have begun work on Section 6 of the Interstate 69 project, the last section between Martinsville and Interstate 465 in Indianapolis, Fox 59 reports.
This section, which will add travel lanes on I-465 and convert SR 37 into an interstate, has a price tag of roughly $1.5 billion.
INDOT’s project includes adding more than 25 miles of new interstate highway, building 39 new bridges, and eliminating 14 traffic signals, as well as improving local access roads and building overpasses.
“It has the potential to be a real game changer from an economic standpoint, from a commerce standpoint,” said INDOT spokesperson Scott Manning, according to the news agency. He said there would be delays as the project progresses. “Once it is complete across the entire corridor, it will be the only interstate that connects three major countries.”
Construction is expected to wrap up in 2024.
