Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure announced that, in January 2018, it will install a new cable collar system on the over the Fraser River in Greater Vancouver, B.C., to improve winter safety and reliability in January 2018, CTV News Vancouver reports.
The new system, which is similar to the one on the Port Mann Bridge, will be operated manually by workers who will load and deploy the collars as they are needed.
“This new cable collar system will help ensure the Alex Fraser Bridge stays open — regardless of the weather — so that people can get to work on time,” Transport Minister Claire Trevena said in the release, according to the news agency.
Last year, wintry conditions on the cable-stayed bridge forced the closure of the bridge several times because snow and ice would fall from the bridge cable onto the roadway.
