Worker killed after being hit by dump truck on Florida’s I-4 Ultimate project

A highway worker in Florida died Feb. 23 after he was struck by a dump truck in the Interstate 4 construction zone.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, SGL Constructors employee Marvin Franklin was working on the $2.3 billion project in Orlando and standing behind a parked dump truck filled with dirt. The dump truck was parked on the site to make a delivery, but when the driver began to back up, the vehicle ran over 34-year-old Franklin.

Franklin was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The cause of the accident is not known at this time, and we will conduct an investigation in partnership with local authorities. Our focus now is to ensure we support individuals and families as they deal with this tragic event. We want to thank the police, fire, and local EMS for their rapid response,” SGL Constructors said in a statement according to My News 13.

The Florida Department of of Transportation couldn’t say if it was the first fatality since work on the I-4 Ultimate project began, but Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Sgt. Kim Montes said that state police hadn’t responded to any other deaths in the work zone.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the accident.
