ARTBA receives grants to provide safety training to construction workers

artba-logoThe American Road and Transportation Builders Associations recently received a federal grant to train workers in the transportation construction industry about fall and work zone hazards.

ARTBA said in a press release the organization received the Susan Harwood Training Grant through the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to expand on ARTBA’s Transportation Development Program’s “Roadway Safety Program.”

The grant will allow ARTBA to hold training sessions for employers in the transportation construction industry and their employees. ARTBA said the classes will be targeted towards workers employed by small businesses as well as Spanish-speaking, minorities, disadvantaged and other “hard-t0-reach” workers.

The topics of the training program will be roadway construction zone hazards and fall prevention. Falls account for about 20 percent of road construction deaths and 35 percent of all deaths in the construction industry, according to OSHA
