In launching its electric-drive D11 XE, Caterpillar reeled off a long list of improvements for its new largest bulldozer over its predecessors:
Up to 25% less fuel consumed per unit of material moved.
5% to 10% more material moved per hour.
60% fewer moving parts with electric drive compared to mechanical drive.
Up to 20% longer life between rebuilds.
3,000-hour increase to 18,000 hours for planned component repair intervals for engine, final drives and hydraulics.
20% to 25% fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
The company says it also made the 120-ton, 861-horsepower beast easier and more comfortable to operate.

What is Electric Drive?
The powertrain for the D11 XE pairs Cat's C32B diesel engine with an onboard generator. As the engine powers the generator, the generator sends electric power to an inverter, which then sends power to two electric motors, one for each track.
The company says this delivers “clear, consistent power to the tracks,” as well as “strong maneuverability and pryout force.”
“By powering both tracks throughout the turn, the system enables smoother, sharper maneuvering and helps operators push more material through the turn.”
The electric drive also eliminates the bevel gear in mechanical systems, so no more need to shift gears.
The benefits include increased fuel efficiency, max torque at any speed, and fewer and longer-lasting components for a lower total cost of ownership. “It also reflects how far dozer performance has advanced,” Fischer says, “offering up to 25% greater efficiency than today’s D11 and up to 40% greater efficiency than the first D11N introduced in 1986.”

CaterpillarCat says it made the cabin more comfortable, starting with a suspended undercarriage that absorbs impact and cuts shock loads in half.

Advanced Tech
Along with cabin comfort, Caterpillar has added a variety of technology to assist operators:
AutoCarry — automatic blade control during the carry segment to reduce fatigue, help maintain optimum track slip and increase productivity by up to 15%.
Mast-less 3D Grade Control — uses dual ROPS-mounted GNSS antennas and blade-mounted sensors to position the cutting edge without blade-mounted masts or cables.
Automated Blade Assist — uses standard dual-tilt capability to automate blade movement to key pitch positions, helping increase efficiency and reduce operator workload.
Automatic ripper control — automatically adjusts engine speed and ripper depth to maximize productivity, minimize track slip and reduce machine wear.
The D11 XE can also be equipped with Cat MineStar, which offers multiple levels of remote control and semi-autonomous operation.

Caterpillar gave the D11 XE a modular design, so major components can be removed independently.

The company says that up to 85% of the dozer’s parts are common to the D11. The electric-drive system also uses 60% fewer parts than mechanical drive.
The C32B engine delivers the same power and performance as the Cat C32 with heavier-duty internal components for increased durability, according to Caterpillar.
“Compared with the D11, the D11 XE can achieve similar total operating hours with one fewer rebuild over the machine’s life. ... The electric-drive generator and motors are designed to last through two machine lives with only re-bearing and resealing.”
Other features designed to simplify maintenance:
Diesel oxidation catalyst aftertreatment — eliminates the need for diesel exhaust fluid and reduces total fluid consumption.
New radiator guard and upgraded case and frame.
Larger lift-cylinder trunnion bearings.
Redesigned pin joints with replaceable bearings — no more line boring for simpler bearing-insert replacement on the ripper, blade and push-arm trunnions.
Buyers financed more than 3,300 crawler dozers from June 1, 2025 to May 31, 2026, according to EDA. (Both EDA and Equipment World are owned by Fusable.)
