Look Out Below!

There’s nothing like sitting in front of the TV and hearing a bridge you just drove under was shut down soon after.

After a bystander heard suspicious noises and drivers noticed falling debris, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) crews came to the scene at Interstate 40 over Charlotte Avenue in downtown Nashville Tuesday.

And all of this happened just one week after TDOT crews made immediate repairs to the bridge after a section blew out.

“Certainly, with an old bridge and all the loading and everything on it, we’ve got cracked concrete,” said TDOT Chief Engineer Paul Degges to ABC News 2. “A lot of rain we’ve been having recently is certainly accelerating deterioration, so we’re going to get up there and look things over closely and see if we may need to come in and do an interim repair.”

While the bridge will continue to undergo repair, with a full overhaul expected next summer, one thing is for sure: I’ll make sure to look up before driving under next time I’m in Nashville.
