According to NBC News, AZDOT worker Gil Estrada was monitoring the traffic cameras last week when he spotted a small white dog on the monitor dodging through traffic on State Route 51.

Estrada saw the dog dodge its way to the median of the highway and struggle to make its way onto the concrete barrier, where it lay down. Estrada then decided to rush to his and drive to the puppy’s location.

“She was lucky, and she was brave, too,” Estrada said. “She knew that she was in peril if she moved anywhere, and she just stayed there. I was just happy to go out there and pick her up.”

The dog has since been taken to the Arizona Equine Rescue Organization shelter.

“We may normally do large animal rescue, but something about this puppy’s situation motivated us to branch outside of the norm,” the organization said on its Facebook page.

The organization even gave a nice shoutout to Estrada and AZDOT in naming the puppy “Dottie.”

No one has come forward to claim their lost puppy yet, but the animal shelter said they are hopeful because “Dottie” appears to be healthy and well cared for.
