On the heels of introducing the redesigned and feature-packed 2019 Sierra, GMC has unveiled the first truck in a new sub-brand aimed at customers who want ample off-road capability without sacrificing the features and comfort one would expect from a GMC truck.

So, while the 2019 Sierra AT4 isn’t quite the Baja-ready behemoth that the Ford Raptor is, it’s far from just an appearance package.

With the AT4, GMC is packing in a 2-inch suspension lift, four-wheel drive, a locking rear differential and a two-speed transfer case that includes low-range 4WD gearing. The AT4 also gets off-road tuned Rancho monotube shocks, hill descent control and a traction select system.

GMC calls hill descent “a driver assistance feature” that uses the anti-lock braking system to ensure a smooth, controlled descent from steep grades “without the driver having to touch the brake pedal in certain conditions.” Traction select offers various preset drive modes that allow the driver to tailor truck traction to certain terrain and weather conditions.

In terms of engines, you’ll be able to spec the Sierra AT4 out with either a 6.2-liter or 5.3L V8, or the new 3L Duramax diesel. If you opt for the 6.2L V8 or the 3L diesel, you’ll get a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Though it largely carries over the new exterior design of the standard 2019 Sierra models, the AT4 does have a few exterior features that set it apart from the rest of the lineup. GMC says the design of the truck is “driven by dark exterior finishes,” with both the front and rear bumpers and the grille surround featuring a body color finish. Vertical recovery hooks add a subtle touch of red to the bumper. The grille design is different as well with a black chrome finish. Black chrome is also found on the LED fog lamp bezels and the fender trim.

Eighteen-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires are standard. Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires are an available option as are 20-inch wheels.

Inside the truck, GMC has continued with the dark design theme with jet black color accents in the seats and dark-tinted aluminum finishes.

Apart from the new look brought on by the 2019 Sierra lineup, the AT4 will also have the new six-action MultiPro tailgate which you can see in action in the video below. GMC’s new CarbonPro carbon fiber tailgate will be an available option on the AT4 when it is released “later in the 2019 model year.”

Technology in the AT4 is headlined by a new 3-inch x 7-inch multi-color Head-Up Display. GMC says the Sierra will be the first full-size truck to offer this feature, which creates a hologram-like effect by projecting information about the truck onto the windshield in the driver’s line of sight.

Another new 2019 feature is the rear view camera mirror. GMC says this dual-function mirror offers the driver a greater field of view than a conventional rear view mirror. It uses a rear-facing high-resolution camera and high-resolution display to create a view that “can help the driver’s view around potential vision obstructions such as occupants or cargo.” You can even tilt or zoom the view the mirror displays.

The 2019 Sierra AT4 will go on sale this fall.
