The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) reports that Corpus Christi’s new Harbor Bridge has reached a milestone, saying, “The first concrete pre-cast segment moved to the project site today,” mySanAntonio reports.

The new bridge is being constructed approximately 1,000 feet west of the current bridge, which opened in 1959.

According to TxDOT, the bridge segment weighed approximately 130 tons and is the first of nearly 2,600 segments that will be needed to complete the new bridge. The new bridge will be taller than its predecessor and will have a vertical clearance of more than 200 feet, which will allow larger ships to enter Corpus Christi’s port.

The $1.5 billion dollar project is expected to be finished by 2020.
