Vögele has upgraded its Super 1800-5 X SprayJet Paver, touting a wider spraying width, enhanced operator comfort and new automation technologies.

The paver is powered by a 173-horsepower Cummins B4.5 – C173 diesel engine and offers paving speeds of up to 82 feet per minute. The Super 1800-5 X SprayJet Paver can be used flexibly: as a conventional road paver with a paving width of up to 30.3 feet or as a spray paver with a spraying width of up to 26.3 feet.

Spray pavers apply bitumen emulsion and asphalt wearing courses in a single pass. The new sprayer can cover 7.4 feet of additional spray width compared to its predecessor.

Five spray bars — located between, behind and to the sides of the crawler tracks — enable consistent emulsion application, even with changing working widths.

The spray nozzles operate in pulse mode at a maximum pressure of 43.6 psi and are available with seven, 10 or 16 nozzles with 70%, 100% and 160% throughput, respectively. An optimized calibration ensures precise dosing across the entire spraying width, even with low volumes, the company says.

The insulated emulsion tank of the spray module has a 554-gallon capacity, while an optional additional emulsion tank expands the capacity up to 1,875 gallons. When emulsion quantities dip below 79 gallons, an additional heating element can be activated to ensure the temperature is maintained until the end of the operation and residual emulsions are completely used up.

Operational Comfort

In redesigning the paver, Vögele optimized the operator console, simplified the operation of the SprayJet functions, reduced the overall height to increase leg room and integrated additional storage options, such as a smartphone holder.

The new SmartWheel allows for precise control of the spray paver, while the optional touch display lets operators monitor and operate existing and future digital solutions.

The tank features a new high-resolution, high-contrast display, allowing operators to easily read values even in bright sunlight. Key functions and displays for the SprayJet-module can also be accessed via the displays on the screed control consoles.

Additional convenience features include:

  • Paver Access Control (PAC): Operators can start up the spray paver at the touch of a button. Using a separate control unit, they can manage all initial steps safely and conveniently.
  • Light Package Plus Option: Two LED spotlights built firmly into the roof and awning illuminate the paver and screed area across the entire paving width. In addition, the new model is also available with a windshield.

New Automation Solutions

New Dash-5 technologies ensure operating comfort, reduced setup times and automated processes, the company says. Key features include the ErgoPlus 5 operating concept with ergonomic controls and intuitive controls, push-button startup with Paver Access Control (PAC), the optional Light Package Plus, or automation solutions like the digital paver control system Smart Pave and digital site documentation with WPT Paving.

The Super1800-5 X SprayJet also assists operators with steering and leveling via Grade Assist, AutoTrac and Smart Pave control profile paving, as well as the direction and width of the Dash-5 paver. Cloud-based jobsite intelligence solutions such as the Wirtgen Group Performance Tracker (WPT) Paving and the new RoadScan help paving crews record and analyze paving, temperature and paver data in real time, and optimize the entire paving process.
