Sakai Unveils its First U.S. Roller with New Object-Detection Auto-Brake

Sakai’s Guardman SW884ND highway-class roller made its American debut at World of Asphalt 2024.

The flagship roller is Sakai’s first model built in the U.S. to feature Guardman, an emergency front- and rear- detection and auto-braking system. The technology uses millimeter-wave radar and 3D Lidar systems to alert the operator of any obstacle and stop the machine as needed.

In the video above, Brad Belvin, Sakai America Inc. sales and marketing manager, hits the highlights of the SW884ND and Guardman technology.

The SW884ND is a 79-inch-wide tandem roller that offers both oscillation and vibration in each drum. A turn of a knob provides either oscillation or vibration depending on the application. The 28,415-pound compactor is powered by a 130-horsepower Cummins engine.

Sakai claims the SW884ND is “the fastest roller available,” featuring a high frequency of over 4,000 vibrations per minute. It is designed to beat the tender zone on superpave and other perpetual pavement mixtures.

Two spray rails are located over each drum, each with its own 160-gallon water tank. The system features three levels of filtration and removable brass nozzles for easy maintenance, plus pressurized winterization. All daily maintenance checkpoints and filters are at ground level.

Operators can choose between five seat positions, each with visibility to the drum edge. The operating console also rotates 180 degrees. Digital programmable cruise control, a lunch box table and a cupholder all come standard.

 Additional features include:

  • Several amplitude and frequency settings per drum at the operator’s station
  • Counter-rotating eccentric weights
  • All vibration controls at the instrument panel
  • Chamfered drum edges
  • Heavy-duty hitch design
  • Durable rubber isolator system for vibratory drums
  • Independent drum vibration
  • Great side and curb clearance
  • Dual drum hydrostatic drive
