Since 2012, Pennsylvania has been working on P3 projects after the signing of the Public-Private Transportation Partnerships Act. It allows state transportation authorities and commissions to partner with private companies for financing, maintaining and building transportation projects.
The P3 board examines all project submissions and PennDOT accepts unsolicited proposals in April and October each year.
“During this period, the private sector can submit proposals offering innovative ways to deliver transportation projects across a variety of modes including roads, bridges, rail, aviation and ports,” the agency says. “Proposals can also include more efficient models to manage existing transportation-related services and programs.”
In December, the P3 board approved 34 bridge improvement projects, with 28 being replaced and six being repaired.
