Map courtesy of NCDOT.The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) reports that construction has begun on the $346 million Interstate 485 corridor improvements project, which will add an express lane and additional corridor improvements along I-485 between I-77 and U.S. 74, according to the Independent Tribune.
Crews began installing barriers at night on both sides of the median in August, which was expected to take approximately two weeks. Once the barrier wall is in place, crews were to begin installing storm drains, as well as paving and grading work.
The project will also include the following improvements:
- Adding one general purpose lane in each direction of I-485 between Rea Road and Providence Road;
- Widening the bridge carrying Ballantyne Commons Parkway over I-485 in Charlotte;
- Improving the interchange at John Street in Matthews; and
- Building an interchange at Weddington Road in Matthews.
The project is expected to open to traffic in late 2022.
