Updated Sep 16, 2019

Qip 123 CoverThe National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) released an updated second edition of Design & Construction of Heavy-Duty Pavements (Quality Improvement Series – QIP 123) on August 27. The publication covers structural design, material section, mixture design, production, construction, and quality control considerations for heavy-duty asphalt pavements, including a discussion on large-stone mixes.

“Heavy-duty asphalt pavements offer the economic, environmental, and maintenance benefits of other asphalt pavements,” said NAPA Vice President for Engineering, Research, & Technology J. Richard Willis, Ph.D., in a press release. “With this revised publication, pavement owners and designers, as well as contractors, can ensure they take the steps necessary during design and construction to create a high-performing pavement that stands up to the heaviest of loads.”

Harold von Quintus, P.E., of Applied Research Associates Inc. updated the publication with new research and field experiences. Support was provided by the Federal Highway Administration through a cooperative agreement with NAPA. A companion series of webinars, “Performance Under Pressure,” was produced through the same cooperative agreement. The final webinar of the series will be held on August 27 at 2 p.m. Eastern. To register, go to www.asphaltpavement.org/webinar.

The publication is available as a PDF download through the NAPA Online Store, http://store.asphaltpavement.org. Archives of the “Performance Under Pressure” webinars are also available through the store.
