Final Take: Rockin’ for the troops

Case is “Rockin’ for the Troops” this month. Partnering with Operation Support Our Troops-Illinois, Case will bring actor Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band to Cantigny Park in Wheaton, Illinois, for a benefit concert for U.S. troops deployed overseas.

Sinise and his band performed for the past two years for a sell-out crowd of 10,000 attendees. This year, American English and Dick Biondi will make guest appearances at the event.

Last year’s event raised funds for a range of organizations including the Hines VA Hospital Poly Trauma Unit, the USO and Operation Homefront.

The concert will be held at Cantigny Park on July 19. The park opens at noon, and live entertainment begins at 4 p.m. Tickets are $25 and are available at participating Jewel-Osco stores, online at the OSOTIL website at www.osotil.org/rockin2008.html or by phone at (800) 594-8499.

Super Tipper
Designer Haishan Deng has taken dump trucks to a new level with the “Super Tipper,” a concept truck he designed for F. X. Meiller, a Munich, Germany-based manufacturer of dump bodies and trailers. The truck’s design mimics the structure and movement of four-legged animals. Deng’s design isn’t just for looks; the Super Tipper unloads in all four directions, and the independent engines and suspension arms allow the wheels to move in different directions and tackle rough terrain. The Super Tipper won a 2008 Red Dot design award, an international award given by Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Essen, Germany, that honors design quality and trendsetters.

Word For Word
“Is it possible to construct a wall without undocumented workers? It’s probably borderline impossible, to be honest with you.”
– Perry Vaughn, executive director of the Rio Grande Valley Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America, to the Brownsville (Texas) Herald about the difficulty of constructing a border fence without using immigrant labor.

“It becomes a significant issue for the province to bring in workers not only from inside Canada, but also the world. It also puts pressure on apprenticeship schools for training. You have to respond to today’s peak needs but at the same time train for tomorrow.”
– George Gritziotis, executive director of the Construction Sector Council, Alberta, Canada, telling the Fort McMurray (Alberta) Today that Canada’s booming construction is creating shortages in workers.
