Manitowoc intros Grove GMK5150/L, 4100L-1 all-terrain cranes with improved controls, new cab, better fuel economy

At its booth on the southern tip of the vast stretches of this year’s Bauma trade show here in Munich, Manitowoc has introduced there new Grove all-terrain cranes.

GMK5150, 5150L

First up are the 150 t, five-axle GMK5150 and 5150L which Manitowoc says feature the strongest taxiing configuration in their class. The company adds that its load charts are also tops when the crane is configured with maximum counterweight for high capacity applications.

On the surface, these cranes feature an updated look with a new, more ergonomic Mercedes carrier cab.

The new more compact design also boasts improved maneuverability. The 5150 has a 51-meter (167-foot) boom while the 5150L has a 60m (197-foot) boom. An 18m (60-ft.) bi-fold, swing-away jib boosts overall reach on both cranes and can be extended with an 8m (26-foot) boom extension and an 8m jib extension for a total jib length of 34m (111.5 ft.).

The jib also offers an improved offset of 50 degrees.

Both the 5150 and 5150L are powered by a single engine. The Tier 4 Final six-cylinder Mercedes-Benz OM471LA produces 523 horsepower at 1,700 rpm and saves on weight to allow the crane to be outfitted with more counterweight.

Max counterweight for both machines is 45 t, allowing for a 20-percent overall load chart increase from their predecessor, the GMK5130-2. In taxiing configuration, the 5150 can carry up to 10.2 t of counterweight, while the 5150L can carry up to 7.9 t.

With the boom fully extended, the 5150L has a capacity of 11.6 t, making it ideal for tower crane assembly and other applications where strength at height is necessary.

The 5150 cranes also include Manitowoc’s standardized user interface, the Crane Control System (CCS). Introduced in 2014 the control system is made up of seven components: crane controller, safety controller, small IO (input/output), large IO, joysticks, jog-dial and display.

The CCS offers operators a Boom Configurator Mode which makes selecting optimium boom position for a specific list easier by asking the operator to simply input lift parameters before calculating the best configuration. Once selected, the boom extends to the required length.

GMK4100L-1

Manitowoc also introduced the Grove GMK 4100L-1, pictured above at Bauma.

The four-axle, 100 t 4100L-1 is more compact than its predecessor with a width of only 8.3 feet and a carrier that is 1.6 feet shorter. The crane features a Fuel Saver function and is powered by a Tier 4 FInal EUROMOT 4 engine.

Manitowoc says the 4100L features best in class load charts when configured with its full complement o counterweight and when configured as a taxi crane. Manitowoc notes that North American customers also benefit from the crane’s fully removable counterweight which brings Gross Vehicle Weight down to the lowest level for four-axle crane with a 100 t rating and a 60m boom.

The 4100L-1 also features the new cab, CCS and Boom Configurator mode found on the new 5100 models discussed above.
