While unveiling K-Tec's new 1230 pull-type scraper at ConExpo in March, the company called it the lightest 30-yarder in its class.
That means less steel to haul around for reduced fuel costs and increased efficiency.
At 29,500 pounds, the 12-foot-wide scraper is also designed as the cheapest way to move lots of dirt compared to more conventional means, according to K-Tec.
“Anywhere you have a lot of dirt to move, you’d be hard pressed to do it any cheaper than you can with a scraper,” says Shaun Eidse, director of R&D/Technology at K-Tec Earthmovers Inc.
By pulling this one machine, one operator can do the job of an excavator, trucks and dozer.
In the video, Eidse takes us on a tour of the scraper’s highlights, which include:
- 2 more cubic yards than the 1228 it replaces.
- Modular back that allows multiple tire sizes.
- Bolt-on grader blades.
- Larger pins and bushings.
- Ejector slider instead of ejector roller for easier, cheaper replacement and increased durability.
So to get a closer look at K-Tec’s new 1230 scraper and its many attributes, check out the video above.

This is the lightest 30-yard scraper on the market. I think our nearest competitor is over 5,000 pounds heavier than ours.

Hi, my name is Shaun. I'm director of products for the K.A. Group, including the K-Tec Scrapers, here today to talk to you about our brand new scraper, the K-Tec 1230. This is the replacement for our K-Tech 1228. It's the Big Brother, the redesigned version of it. We added two cubic yards to it. We made a modular design out of it so we can build it more consistent and keep our quality higher.
00:00:26:29 - 00:00:50:22
Shaun Eidse
We've added some new features like multiple tire options including 235 standard; 265 is optional. We've added bolt on grader blades. We've replaced some of our wear points that were high, where complaints from customers. We've increased our pin and bushing sizes. We've replaced the ejector rollers with an ejector slider now. So a lot of the customer issues that you had on the 1228, we tried to take that and improve it into a bigger and better scraper.
00:00:50:24 - 00:01:10:15
Shaun Eidse
Some of the new features on the 1230 of them is our bolt on grader blades. So this attachment keeps that jobsite cleaner as it funnels material into the bowl as you're loading. And it doesn't keep it keeps those windrows from happening as you're going through the site. So a nice add on that wasn't available on our previous 1228. As I mentioned, we used composite bushings on all the scrapers and all of our pinpoints.
00:01:10:15 - 00:01:26:11
Shaun Eidse
These are long life composite bushings, but we've increased the size of the pins and the bushings on this 1230 versus the 1228, so that you get longer life out of them. That bigger diameter takes that wear longer so that you don't have to change them as often. Big change on this scraper versus the 1228 comes to the backside of it.
00:01:26:13 - 00:01:42:22
Shaun Eidse
We updated the ejector to a new design, more modular. We got rid of the expanded metal that didn't seem to last. We replaced the rollers, which were a high-wear component, something that would flat spot really quickly. So now we've replaced them with a slider that's easy to replace, a lot cheaper and will last. And like you would make adjustments quicker.
00:01:42:24 - 00:02:02:03
Shaun Eidse
We've got a modular back section now so you can fit different tires into here. You can set them up as either in-line or staggered. They're running on individual axles now with newer located grease points. So no longer do you have to crawl under the machine to grease it. Now you can find those grease points easily accessible just by walking around the back of the machine.
00:02:02:06 - 00:02:18:03
Shaun Eidse
The back end features are updated push block, which has multiple options so you can go with the standard push block if you plan on doing a lot of pushing. We have a heavy duty version and if you want a smoother push, we also have a bolt on cast roller that would allow you a bit of a cleaner push between it.
00:02:18:03 - 00:02:36:26
Shaun Eidse
So you're no longer solid metals and solid metal, but you have movement between your dozer and the back of your scraper. So the 1230, like most of the K-Tec naming conventions, indicates that it's a 12-ft-wide cutting width and we have a 30 cubic yard ISO capacity on this unit. So it's really well-designed for those high horsepower tractors, four wheel drives, either Case or Steiger or Fent.
00:02:36:28 - 00:02:51:27
Shaun Eidse
We see them on some of the larger front wheel assist like the 1050. So capacity wise it's a really nice solution for those high horsepower tractors. So one of the big features that we're really excited about with this scraper is with the amount of engineering and time we've put into it. This is the lightest 30 yard scraper on the market.
00:02:51:27 - 00:03:15:04
Shaun Eidse
We have multiple people in the market in this size range that are significantly heavier, but for us, we focus a lot on stress analysis and field testing so that you're moving dirt, not moving extra steel. So I think our nearest competitor is over 5,000 pounds heavier than ours. This is just under 30,000 pounds as a scraper. So that's less weight that you're putting on the back of your tractor and less extra steel that you're dragging around on every K-Tec.
00:03:15:04 - 00:03:34:13
Shaun Eidse
Every Ashland scraper is compatible with a GPS system. We normally just have mounting points on them. Those mounting points allow you to mount any brand of GPS or laser on the tractor themselves. As long as the GPS can integrate with the tractor, you have no problem controlling your scraper anywhere. You have a lot of dirt to move, you'll be hard pressed to do it any cheaper than you can with a scraper.
00:03:34:16 - 00:03:52:28
Shaun Eidse
We see a lot of land developments. We see, you know, new warehouses, all that dirt work that has to get done before they start the foundation. Scrapers are a great choice for that. Land developments. As far as new housing areas where you're converting land into housing developments, flood mitigation, sort of, you know, dealing with water drain ways and things like that.
00:03:52:29 - 00:04:17:12
Shaun Eidse
So anywhere you have a lot of dirt to move, you can do it cheap with a scraper and efficiently. The real benefit with the scraper, you're picking up that material, hauling it, unloading it, leveling it and packing it with one machine. You've got that. That tractor power unit together with the scraper is one combo. You've got one operator doing a massive amount of work now instead of, you know, with trucks and excavators, you have an excavator, you've got multiple trucks, you got a dozer, you got a guy packing it down.
00:04:17:19 - 00:04:27:25
Shaun Eidse
We can do that job with just this unit. Now, if you have dirt, if it's really rocky, scrapers aren't always going to be your best friend. But if it's dirt, I challenge anyone to move it cheaper than with a scraper.
