Kent Beecham won the top honor at the fourth annual Construction Intern Awards presented by construction software developer HCSS.

Beecham, who is working toward an MBA degree at California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo, received a $10,000 scholarship for being named Intern of the Year. Beecham was an intern for John Madonna Construction in San Luis Obispo, California, as a dozer and excavator operator on the Highway 1 landslide project in Big Sur.

Beecham called the internship, in which he worked 100 hours a week for months away from home, “a challenging and unforgettable experience.” Beecham also has a bachelor’s degree in construction management.

Along with the Inter of the Year check, HCSS presented scholarships totaling $40,000 to construction interns for 2018.

Intern of the Year candidates were judged by a panel of industry experts. Those winning weekly scholarships were chosen by online votes and an HCSS judging committee.

“These recipients represent future industry leaders who will continue to build America,” said HCSS CEO Mike Rydin.
