The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District 5-0 reports that its Interstate 78 project in Berks County, which featured multiple bridges built using innovative construction practices and precast concrete materials, was successfully completed in 8.5 months, rather than four years.
All six bridges were completely designed and constructed with prestressed and precast concrete members produced by PENNSTRESS. The project also featured accelerated bridge construction practices, including the Precast Bridge Element System (PBES), which significantly reduced the duration of the project. Each bridge, which normally would have taken up to 8 months to complete, was completed in an average of 43 days.
A time-lapse video of the construction of one of the I-78 bridges is below. The bridge featured in the video, SR 0183 (Bernville Road), was the final bridge of the project.
