Nashville drivers just made it past their second weekend of the closing of Interstate 24 in the downtown area.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation says two more weekends of closing that section of the interstate will be needed for the $28.5 million project to replace the Oldham Street and Spring Street bridges. Though the weekend closures are inconvenient, TDOT says the accelerated bridge construction methods that allow such closures will also result in a much sooner completion date.

Hurricane Nate’s rains, however, caused some delays, requiring TDOT to hold off on a planned closure on the weekend of October 6-9. The makeup closure is tentatively scheduled for November 17-20.

Over the weekend of October 20-23, crews replaced the westbound half of the I-24 Spring Street Bridge, performed repairs on the Silliman Evans Bridge and around the Shelby Street exit, TDOT said.

Bell and Associates Construction is the prime contractor for the project.
