NCDOT to speed up Winston-Salem Northern Beltway using design-build contracts

North Carolina state line welcome signThe North Carolina Department of Transportation says it will be able to accelerate portions of the Winston-Salem Northern Beltway by as much as four years and finish Interstate 40 improvements seven months early by using design-build contracts.

The beltway will become part of I-74 in the future.

“These projects will relieve congestion, enhance safety, support economic development and improve mobility throughout the Triad and were made possible through the new transportation funding formula championed by Gov. Pat McCrory,” Transportation Sec. Nick Tennyson says. “Building a transportation network that better connects people to jobs, healthcare, education and recreation is a key part of the Governor’s 25-Year Vision for Transportation in North Carolina. I am very pleased we will be able to open these projects to traffic much sooner than originally anticipated.”

Sections with new construction design-build let dates include:

  • Eastern Section – I-40 to U.S. 421/B40: from October 2020 to April 2018
  • Eastern Section – U.S. 311 to Baux Mountain Road: from October 2021 to February 2018
  • Eastern Section – Baux Mountain Road to NC 8: from October 2021 to February 2018
  • Eastern Section – NC 8 to University Parkway: from June 2022 to February 2018
  • Western Section – University Parkway to U.S. 52 (interchange): from June 2022 to July 2018
  • I-40 widening – Harper Road to NC 801: from February 2018 to July 2017
