More than one million motorists confirm each day… InSync’s intelligent signals move traffic faster and more safely

In Sync EquipmentOptimizing traffic signals and creating arterial roadway progression in dozens of cities and hundreds of intersections across the country, the InSync adaptive traffic control system from Rhythm Engineering has been selected by more agencies than any other adaptive traffic control system. The reason for InSync’s success is simple: it delivers unmatched benefits at an affordable price.

InSync: An Investment You Can’t Afford to Miss

Independent studies confirm InSync is a powerful investment in a community by saving motorists from wasted time, wasted fuel, harmful emissions and crashes.

How InSync Works

Global Optimization along a Series of Intersections

InSync creates progression along an entire corridor by using “green tunnels.” Platoons of vehicles gather and are then released through the corridor. By communicating with each other, the signals anticipate the green tunnel’s arrival so vehicles pass through without slowing down or stopping. The green tunnels’ duration and frequency can vary to best support traffic conditions. Between green tunnels, the local optimization serves the side streets and left turns.

InSync is a plug-and-play system that’s fully compatible with existing cabinets and controllers, so there is nothing to discard. The system’s artificial intelligence is like having a skilled traffic engineer at every intersection. With IP video cameras for its eyes and a processor for its brain, InSync’s artificial intelligence emulates the decisions a traffic engineer would make: dynamic signalization based on real- time traffic demand. The InSync processor is a state machine, enabling the system to call up the signal state that best serves actual demand while coordinating its decision with other intersections. Instead of following a rigid timing plan, traffic signals turn green intelligently and immediately. More efficient use of green time increases service to all approaches. As one satisfied client said, “InSync is a traffic engineer’s dream. By giving intelligent fully – actuated service at each intersection and maintaining progression along a series of intersections, you get the best of both worlds.”

Additional benefits

Traffic engineers can also view each intersection through any computer with Internet access without the need for special software. Traffic data can be delivered from the system to the managing agency. Functionality is included to alert the agency and Rhythm Engineering in the event of any abnormal activity and functionality is built-in to overcome the effects of loss of detection (such as fog) or hardware issues. Existing inductive loop sensors can be easily integrated with InSync, and pedestrian traffic can be optimized with vehicular traffic. Plus, existing functionality such as emergency vehicle preemption continues to perform as it always has – and there is never transition with InSync!

Local Optimization at Each Intersection

InSync uses integrated digital sensors to know the exact number of cars demanding service at an intersection and how long they’ve been waiting. Approaches are given phasing priority based on this queue and delay data. InSync’s dynamic phasing and dynamic green splits enable the traffic signals to use green time efficiently.
