JCB has added in-cylinder technologies to its Ecomax engines, allowing the engines to meet EU Stage IIIB/US Tier 4 Interim emissions standards.

The Ecomax engine will be fitted into machines spanning the 74- to 173-horsepower range, including JCB backhoe loaders, Loadall telescopic handlers, wheeled loading shovels, the TM range of telescopic boom wheeled loaders, JS excavators, rough terrain forklifts and skid steer loaders. The engine will allow these machines to run on standard engine oils.

In order to set the Ecomax engine to EU Stage IIIB/US Tier 4 Interim emissions standards, JCB has designed it with a combustion process design, which uses injection pressures of 2,000 bar in the common rail system, variable geometry turbocharging for rapid response at low rpm and cooled exhaust gas recirculation.

To properly care for Stage IIIB/Tier 4 Interim engines, which must run on ultra-low sulphur fuels, JCB offers upgraded fuel and air filters for Ecomax engines, a 5 micron water separator and fuel filter for the fuel supply line to supplement the 2 micron engine filter and a crankcase ventilation filter (to be replaced at 1,500 hour intervals). However, proper care likely won’t break the bank–JCB says a typical basket of filters for a Stage IIIB backhoe loader should cost around $206, compared to about $109 for a Stage IIIA model.

Some security and electronic control features of the Ecomax engine include the LiveLink telematic system, which provides improved diagnostics, fuel economy and work related data, such as fuel economy in different working modes; ECU pairing, which allows a machine’s electronic control unit to be paired with the LiveLink ECU to prevent theft; and remote PIN management to assign different PIN codes to different drivers.
