Updated Jul 19, 2016

New York welcome signNew York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has announced a statewide program to rehabilitate and replace bridges and culverts over the next two years that can tap into $200 million in funding from the BRIDGE NY program.

The program is focused on projects that address “poor structural conditions; mitigate weight restrictions or long detours; facilitate economic development or increase competitiveness; and/or reduce the risk of flooding.”

Municipalities authorized to receive and administer state and federal transportation funding qualify to receive money from the program. The entities must submit applications and projects will be awarded funding “through a competitive process and will support all phases of project development including design, right-of-way and construction.”

Projects will be reviewed for structure resiliency, current conditions, traffic volumes, detour considerations, businesses served and overall commerce impact, officials report.

“Modernizing and improving transportation infrastructure is a vital component of enhancing New York’s economic competitiveness,” Gov. Cuomo said. “By helping local governments make investments to ensure the safety and reliability of their bridges, the BRIDGE NY program will literally strengthen our communities and bolster their viability.”

The deadline for BRIDGE NY funding applications is Sept. 9, and more details are available at https://www.dot.ny.gov/bridgeny.

The New York State Department of Transportation is administering the program through its $21.1 billion five-year Capital Plan.
