Volvo Group is bringing its trucks, construction equipment and autonomous solutions under one roof to better serve customers in the mining industry with the launch of a new dedicated business unit: Volvo Mining.
Launching January 1, Volvo Mining will initially serve mining customers and their service providers in Sweden, Norway and Finland, with plans to expand into additional markets.
The new organization is designed to offer mining customers a single integrated business structure for products that have been previously dispersed across the Volvo Group, with a focus on the “productivity, safety and resilience” required by mining operations.
“Mining has been an important part of the Volvo Group for decades, but the industry's growing significance calls for an even greater level of focus. With Volvo Mining as our center of expertise, we are combining capabilities from across the Group to further enhance customer value in collaboration with our retail partners. This will create new opportunities to strengthen our position in a strategically important and growing segment,” says Melker Jernberg, president of Volvo CE.
Volvo Mining will be housed under Volvo Group’s Construction Equipment division. Per-Erik Lindström, currently senior vice president of Volvo Trucks International, has been named head of Volvo Mining.

“As the mining industry evolves, customers are looking for partners who can help them improve productivity, strengthen safety and meet growing sustainability expectations. Our goal is to be a long-term partner in that transformation, helping customers create greater value through the combined strengths of Volvo Group. I look forward to working closely with customers and partners as we build this next chapter together,” says Lindström.
Unifying Existing Product Lines
Mining operations require multiple types of machines and vehicles working together across excavation, hauling, loading and transportation in demanding and often remote conditions. As mines continue to focus on improving productivity, reducing emissions and enhancing safety, the need for integrated solutions is increasing.
Here’s a look at some of the mining-specific equipment and technology already in Volvo’s portfolio:
Haul Trucks: Earlier this year, Volvo CE announced plans to shutter its Rokbak articulated hauler business, concentrating its efforts on the Volvo CE portfolio. Volvo CE currently offers the A25, A30, A35, A40, A45, A50 and A60 models of articulated dump trucks, as well as the R60, R70 and R100 rigid-frame haulers.
Excavators: Volvo CE also offers a range of large excavators aimed at heavy earthmoving, quarrying and mining applications, with the 209,000-pound EC950F sitting at the top of its range.
Wheel Loaders: The company’s largest wheel loader, the L350H, has an operating weight of 124,000 pounds, positioning it for heavy-duty loading, mining and quarrying applications. Other large wheel loaders, including the L260, L220, L200 and L180, can also be configured for mining work.
Trucks: While not available in the U.S., Volvo Trucks already offers on-road heavy-haul trucks for mining and quarry transportation, including its FH16, touting up to 780 horsepower, sturdy axles, i-Shift crawler gears, a heavy-duty bumper and drag-free disc brakes.
Autonomous Hauling: Autona / earth is Volvo’s autonomous hauling solution for mining operations, designed to improve safety by removing people from high-risk environments and increase productivity by enabling 24/7 operations.
“By combining our proven autonomous technology and operational experience with Volvo Group’s broader expertise, portfolio and customer relationships, we can provide integrated solutions that also deliver measurable value for mining customers – improving safety, productivity and efficiency across their operations,” says Nils Jaeger, president, Volvo Autonomous Solutions.
Volvo Mining is backed by dedicated financial services and will drive product and service portfolio management for the Group’s mining segment globally, the company says. It will also coordinate various research projects across the Group.
