Photo: CaltransThe northbound Interstate 405/San Diego Freeway connector to westbound I-105 near the Los Angeles airport will be closed until April for reconstruction, according to the California Department of Transportation.
Caltrans says the long-term closure of the connector, which begins at 11 p.m. January 2, is needed to provide a safe zone for construction workers and drivers. The project involves demolishing the single-lane connector ramp and rebuilding it. Pavement on the section of freeway will be excavated and repaired with concrete slabs to create a smoother drive and improve safety, Caltrans says. A new drainage system will also be installed.
Caltrans said it timed the closure to avoid Los Angeles World Airports’ most congested seasons, winter and summer. The freeway’s northbound section to eastbound I-105 is scheduled to reopen at 5 a.m. January 3 after being closed for 14 weeks, Caltrans says.
The road closures are part of $4.3 million in road and embankment repairs on both I-105 connectors in Hawthorne and El Segundo, which began in March.
