John Deere has expanded its range of premium-spec wheel loaders with the new 844 X-Tier and 904 X-Tier.
The production-class loaders come equipped with top-end features and advanced technology, including electrified drivetrain, intelligent machine controls and optional operator awareness systems, designed to help operators move more material while burning less fuel.
Additional X-Tier models in Deere’s lineup include the 644, 744, 824 and 944 X-Tier.
Both the 844 and 904 X-Tier feature the John Deere Electric Variable Transmission (EVT), which replaces both the torque converter and traditional transmission with electronically managed power. Two electric motors plus an inverter manage torque, power to the ground and ground speed.
Deere reports that the EVT delivers smoother operation, faster response, single-pedal control and increased efficiency in tough working conditions compared to P-Tier models.
Additional features of the EVT include:
- Coast Control: Enables single pedal truck and hopper loading. There are four settings for torque converter to hydrostatic feel.
- Cruise Control: Enables the loader to hold a ground-level speed.
- Warmup Logic: Automatically raises engine speed and uses clutches to warm up the transmission.
The new Pile Slip Assist feature proactively enacts the differential lock ahead of approaching a pile to reduce tire slip, improve bucket fill and lower cycle times. This reduces total cost of ownership through decreased tire wear, which is one of the biggest cost drivers in this size class, Deere says. The Tire Pressure Monitoring System keeps operators aware of inflation levels to further extend tire life.
Larger, high-strength steel buckets allow operators to move more material with each pass, compared to P-Tier models, the company says.
Two operation modes are available to balance efficiency and output based on the application. In Standard Mode, operators can achieve up to 15% fuel savings, while Performance Mode delivers up to a 5% productivity increase for high-demand tasks. Together, Deere says, these gains help reduce total cost of ownership by up to 4% compared to previous models.
Despite some major component differences, Deere says its X-Tier and P-Tier loaders share the following commonalities:
- Comfortable redesigned cab
- TMV axles with updated front input bearings, brake discs, spiral pinion gears
- Programmable electrohydraulic controls with more customization options
X-Tier models also include more premium features in the base machine, including a heated and ventilated seat, HVAC system with automatic temperature control, AM/FM radio with Bluetooh, LED lights and a sealed switch module. Up to 10 different attachment configurations, including flow, responsiveness and other preferred modes, can be set and stored through the monitor.

Optional Advanced Vision System (AVS) and Advanced Object Detection features help expand visibility for the operator and improve safety onsite. AVS expands side and rear visibility beyond conventional mirrors, with two digital cameras installed on the sideview mirrors.
Advanced Object Detection provides audible alerts when objects are detected at the rear of the machine. It also adds dynamic reversal projected path lines to help operators visualize the machine’s reverse path based on articulation and to better avoid people and objects within that path. The sideview and rearview cameras are integrated into a single display in the cab.
All daily service points, including fuel, are grouped on the left side of the machine. The standard auto-lube system integrates with machine diagnostics to help save time and operating expenses. The stacked cooling package enables direct airflow to minimize debris buildup, the company says.
The 844 and 904 X-Tier wheel loaders are supported by John Deere Operations Center, remote diagnostics and a range of service and maintenance plans. Deere offers a 5-year/15,000-hour electric-drive components coverage for qualified electronic-drive components.
