tow_plowThe Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) has a launched a new fleet of three tow plows allowing the agency to clear two full highway lanes in a single pass.

The department says the new plows will provide a much-needed boost to its winter maintenance and snow-clearing operations.

“Clearing snow and ice from our roads and highways during winter storms is one of our most critical functions as an agency,” says CTDOT Commissioner James P. Redeker said.  “With the winter season upon us, the addition of these tow plows to our snow-fighting fleet ensures we can better handle virtually any winter-weather event in an efficient and strategic manner, while reducing costs to the taxpayer.”

The department had previously tested one tow plow during the 2015-2016 winter season. The pilot went so well CTDOT decided to purchase two more units, allowing them to “improve cycle times and reduce overall fuel consumption associated with snow clearing operations.”

“When in operation, the steerable trailer-mounted tow plows swing out to one side of the truck and are equipped with a granular spreader for dispensing liquids for snow and ice control,” the agency says.

CTDOT reports the two plows also feature additional safety benefits, including rear and side mounted cameras, lights for illuminating the plow work area and warning motorists, a laser guide to determine tow plow position in relation to obstacles. The department also says tow plows can stay in service for longer than traditional plow trucks.
