Komatsu has opened its new Customer Experience Center, Surface Haulage Headquarters and support hub for its global mining equipment business in Peoria, Illinois.

The company held a grand opening June 11 with its largest rigid-frame dump truck, the 980E-5SE, displayed at the entrance. The 980E-5SE has a 400-ton payload, weighs 1.4 million pounds and runs on a 4,400-horsepower Komatsu diesel engine. It is produced in Peoria.

Along with the hauling headquarters and customer service center, the new office building will house engineering, innovation, sales, manufacturing management and other functions supporting the company’s global mining business. Komatsu’s mining technologies headquarters is based in Milwaukee.

The three-story Peoria building cost $28 million and spans 75,000 square feet.

Komatsu outlines the following highlights of the new facilities:

  • Creates a place for teams to support the development of next-generation mining technologies and strengthen customer engagement.
  • Enables visitors to experience Komatsu’s capabilities, product innovation and role in supporting the future of mining through an immersive Customer Experience Center.
  • Supports more sustainable operations, including renewable energy credits to offset 100% of purchased electricity, a rainwater collection system for irrigation, and a 100-kilowatt solar array expected to produce about 120,000 kWh a year.

“From our work in electric-drive haulage to technologies that support low-emission mining, this site represents our commitment to creating value together with our customers, employees and community for generations to come,” says Dan Funcannon, Komatsu senior vice president for surface haulage.

The new center and headquarters replaces an office building originally built in the 1970s.
