The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) recently recognized 24 photographers as part of its Rustic Roads Photo Contest, a program that celebrated the 40th anniversary of the first Rustic Road designated in the state.

rustic-40thThe Rustic Road program was established to “help citizens and local units of government preserve what remains of Wisconsin’s scenic, lightly traveled country roads.” WisDOT says these roads are under local municipality control, but are eligible for state aid programs like other public highways.

There are 117 Rustic Roads in Wisconsin which travel 669 miles across 59 counties. Eighty-four photographers entered 380 photos for the eight categories of the contest.

“The many outstanding photos we received are a vivid reminder that our scenic Rustic Roads network remains as popular as ever,” WisDOT Scenic Byways and Rustic Roads Coordinator Jane Carrola said. “We also need to thank all the counties, towns and other local governments who retain jurisdiction of Rustic Roads and keep them well maintained year-round.”
