After nearly 17 months of construction, the North Texas Tollway Authority is scheduled to open two northbound lanes and one southbound lane of the City of Fort Worth’s new Hulen Street Bridge Saturday, Sept. 29, weather permitting. Located just east of the existing bridge, the new structure soars over the Union Pacific Railroad’s Davidson Yard.
Part of the NTTA’s Chisholm Trail Parkway project, the new bridge is approximately 10 feet taller at its highest point than the original structure that opened in 1967.
Some lanes will remain closed as construction crews use a portion of the new bridge to stage equipment for demolition of the old bridge.
When project construction around the new bridge is complete in spring 2013, a total of three traffic lanes in each direction will be open to motorists. At the same time, a 10-foot -wide walkway for pedestrians on the northbound side of the new bridge will also open.
Work is also progressing on the new Chisholm Trail Parkway Bridge that is being built beneath the new Hulen Street Bridge and above the Davidson Yard.
Chisholm Trail Parkway is the NTTA’s first project in both Tarrant and Johnson counties. The toll road will extend nearly 28 miles from downtown Fort Worth south to Cleburne. The entire project is expected to open to traffic mid-2014.
