Cummins unveiled its QSM 12 engine, Tier 4 Final version, at Bauma 2013 yesterday, our sister site, Equipment World reported from the show.

The six cylinder engine reduces emissions through the use of higher efficiency air handling and advanced combustion technology, which also allows the engine to work without cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR).

The QSM 12 runs up to 40 percent cooler than previous models and is rated from 335 to 512 horsepower.

The QSM 12 is outfitted with a wastegate turbocharger and features a downscaled version of Cummins’ ultra high pressure fuel system that is used for the QSX15 engine. The new engine cleans up remaining emissions with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR).

Weight saving features include use of composite oil pans and valve covers, which boost power-to-weight ratio, and a reduction in the engine’s envelope size.
