SSC Underground: From a Phone Tip to a $9M Business

“Hey, do you want to start a company?”

That unsuspecting phone call from Marcia Veidmark’s in-laws, Lois and Arvid Veidmark Sr., was the start of SSC Underground.

The serial entrepreneurs had secured a U.S. West contract to install telephone lines in Phoenix and needed Marcia and Arvid Jr.’s help to get the job done.

While the senior Veidmarks left after four years to pursue another business, it was the perfect fit for Marcia, Arvid Jr. and their three sons.

“We absolutely loved being in business and building a business together,” says Marcia.

Since then, the company she and her husband Arvid Veidmark Jr. co-founded in 1969 has transitioned from open-cut excavation to horizontal boring to offering a full slate of trenchless services, including vacuum excavation, hydro excavation, tunneling, utility potholing and underground consulting.

The company now has revenues of around $9 million and employs around 40 people.
