Komatsu has introduced two new rigid frame off-highway trucks. The 40-ton HD325-8 and 44-ton HD405-8 feature several improvements including an improved cab, traction control and a more powerful, more fuel efficient engine.

Both trucks are powered by the 514-horsepower Komatsu SAA6D140E-7 engine. Compared to previous Komatsu rigid frame trucks, fuel consumption is cut on the HD325-8 by 9 percent while the HD405-8 enjoys fuel savings of 6 percent. The engine features Power and Economy work modes and auto idle shutdown. It meets Tier 4 Final regulations through a combination of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and the use of a diesel particulate filter (DPF).

The engine is paired with a Komatsu transmission with Optimum Modulation Control which Komatsu says adjusts shifting performance according to demand, making the ride more comfortable and reducing material spillage.

Komatsu is making its Traction Control System standard on the trucks. This system applies independent brake assemblies to achieve traction across various ground conditions. Komatsu says steering performance is not compromised because the system operates without the need for differential lock-up.

Additional performance boosts come from a MacPherson strut front suspension which provides a tight turning radius, and a hydropneumatic suspension system for a smooth ride. The trucks also feature Automatic Retard Speed control which maintains a selected downhill travel speed appropriate to the grade.

Inside the new cab operators will find a 7-inch color display, a dedicated rearview monitor, auxiliary audio jack, two 12-volt ports and a ventilated and heated, air-suspension, high-back seat. Data from an integrated payload meter is available on both the trucks’ monitor and on the web. The monitor also delivers Komtrax telematics data which includes machine metrics, DPF status and fuel consumption. This data can be collected and sorted based on operator ID.

Access to the cab has been improved with new angled front access stairs with handrails on both sides of the trucks.
