Lift Kit Helps Set Up Older Chevy Dually Service Truck For Off-Pavement Work
Setting up a purpose-built service truck takes a lot of thought if time and money are to be well-spent.
One area that needs to be addressed is the work environment and how the truck’s suspension and tires play into helping it get in and out of such locations more efficiently.
Four-wheel-drive diesel duallys make great service trucks: Their wide rear-track and 1-ton design are a perfect design for carrying a heavy load and getting through tough driving conditions found at heavy construction, road building and oil/gas field sites.
Used duallys in excellent condition are easy to find as RVers (and horse owners) tend to put relatively low miles and take care of them before trading up to newer models.
We found a 2008 Chevy Silverado 3500 Crew Cab in just such condition. All it needed to be a great service truck for off-pavement/off-road jobs were taller, more aggressive tires.
Duallys headed for field service work function very well riding on 35-inch mud tires. But to achieve the higher ground clearance 35-inch mud tires provided requires the installation of a moderate suspension lift kit.
One of the best suspension lifts for this type of application is the Cognito Motorsports adjustable 4-6” lift kit with Cognito upper control arms to increase wheel travel.
Hellwig sway bars front and rear and a Hellwig rear air suspension add further stability and load control.
Then it’s easy to install Toyo mud tires on the 22-inch American Force Combat wheels to set such a service truck apart from the plain-Janes.
There’s nothing wrong with a work truck standing tall and looking good. Such a rig can be a rolling billboard for a company – and a sense of pride for the drivers and mechanics that take it in the field.
