ARTBA names winner of transportation education award

The American Road & Transportation Builders Association has announced the winner of its S.S. Steinberg Award, which recognizes an individual who has made “remarkable” contributions to transportation education.

Randy Machemehl, an engineering professional at the University of Texas, received the award during the annual meeting of the association’s research and education division, held in Washington Jan. 23. Machelmehl is the “Nasser I. Al-Rashid Centennial Professor of Transportation Engineering” in the department of civil, architectural and environmental engineering at UT. He also has served as director of the university’s Center for Transportation Research since 1999. During his tenure, the center has expanded both faculty and student participation and its funding has more than doubled.

Machemehl has authored or co-authored more than 200 papers, articles and technical reports. His research interests focus on solving urban freeway operational problems and optimizing urban traffic signal systems.
